LOS ANGELES — Alemany boys volleyball has been pushing all week to make history and its goal for this season was to claim the Mission League title. Unfortunately, Loyola showed once again why the program has dominated its rival opponent for nearly two decades.

Loyola got off to a slow start and then took command in the middle of the first set and Alemany was routed on the road,  25-18, 25-18, 26-24. The loss means Alemany will have to wait at least one more season to clinch at least a share of the Mission League title it hasn’t won since 1999.

Loyola (17-1) trailed set one 6-1 but then caught fire behind sophomore Luke Turner, who ripped a shot down the middle to make the score 18-9 and Alemany never fully recovered.

Turner finished the match with a game-high 16 kills for the Cubs.

After the play was over, Alemany senior outside hitter Tanner Briggs received a yellow card for yelling at the officials over a double touch call on setter Steven Weese.

“I should have done a better job of keeping my composure,” Tanner Briggs said. “At the same time too, I didn’t feel that the card was necessarily warranted. I was just trying to defend my teammate, but at the end of the day the officials run the game. It was in the middle of competition and I’m a competitor. It happens.”

Coach David Decker spoke to his embattled senior after the costly play which gave an added point to Loyola.

“I just told him that we are not going to beat teams by allowing the officials to make calls against them,” Decker said. “We are going to beat them by doing what we do well. It was a good learning moment and he responded well.

Turner continued to attack Alemany’s middle and Loyola managed to throw waves of double teams at junior Long Beach State commit Mason Briggs.

“It was tough and they did a good job of coming at me,” Mason Briggs said. “We kept attacking and attacking. I think we still played well. We know that we are a great team and we’re just going to get back at it tomorrow.”

Alemany (22-2-1) went five sets before Loyola came away with the win and haven’t won against its Mission League foe since 1994.

Mason Briggs led his team with 10 kills and his team led 17-9 in the final set. Alemany was able to serve Loyola out of rotation but could not handle the power behind Turner who had seven kills in the final set.

Now the Briggs brothers will have to wait until the playoffs for another shot at Loyola.

“We know we can play with them,” Tanner Briggs said. “I love the way that they bring out that spirit in us. I love playing them every single time. We showed what we were capable of at home and just didn’t come out as strong today. We’re just going to have to work so we can get them back.”

BURBANK – It always seems like the temperature is increased whenever Burbank and Burroughs go to battle. Both teams attract some of the best talent in the city with simply 1.5 miles of separation between the two programs.

The energy of the building matriculates from the court to the stands with the fans mixed in blue and red doing as much battle with their voices as the players do on the court.

Burroughs in front of a boisterous road crowd spoiled Burbank’s senior night to come away with a four set victory (25-15, 20-25, 27-25, 25-22) to clinch the Pacific League title.

Burbank (15-6, 9-2) wanted to settle the score after being swept in its first matchup against its crosstown rival but struggled with its control to start the match. In the first set Burbank committed 11 errors and Burbank picked apart the back row with five aces during that period.

Burroughs (16-8, 11-0) started the match by scoring on three aces including two consecutive by opposite hitter Michael Rumford. Burbank struggled in the first set with 11 errors.

Burbank recovered after stumbling through set one led by the leadership of captain and school valedictorian Jonathan Ragheb. Ragheb settled his team down with an aggressive approach at the net and Burbank led 23-16 in set two.

The ‘seventh man’ played a huge factor as the noise level inside the arena grew point by point. The crowd became frustrated after five stoppages were caused by confusion between the officials and score keepers in the third set. After Burroughs took an early lead Burbank charged right back on a 6-0 run and led 20-18 capped by a kill from junior middle blocker Luca Bily.

Bily found his rhythm but was no match for senior outside hitter Cole Kaitz and Rumford. Kaitz drove a kill down the near sideline to tie the score at 25-25 and Rumford put down the deciding block to end set three.

“That was a crazy game,” Kaitz said. “Second time playing them we knew they were going to come out with a lot of fire and a lot of passion especially knowing we were playing them at their place. We just knew we had to compete and battle with them and that’s what we did.

Burroughs in the deciding set called upon middle blocker Jagger Green who provided key moments off the bench. Green had two kills and two blocks to provide support for Kaitz.

Kaitz finished with 16 kills, Diego Rosal had 12 kills and Rumfold added nine kills with five aces. Rumfold’s serving ultimately proved to be a deciding factor against Burbank.

“In a game like this you really try not to get too high or too low,” Rumfold said. “We treat this game like every other game whether it’s a CIF game, a tournament game or a rivalry. We’ve been trained since the summer through our conditioning and how we practice.”

Ragheb finished with 10 kills and three blocks for Burbank and Rory Rickey added 11 kills as his team gets primed for the Division II CIF Southern Section playoffs.

“That was a tough game,” Rickey said. “A couple of balls didn’t go our way but I’m still proud with how we competed. It’s always great playing against Burroughs and knowing we played well against one of the toughest teams around. Now we need to regroup and I believe we are ready. We just played against Peninsula who is tough and we just need to continue to play with this energy.”

Saturday night’s first set created a small blizzard after Alemany shockingly took the first set off the unbeaten Newport Harbor boys volleyball team. But the only storm to be dealt with was Newport Harbor’s UCLA-bound outside hitter Cole Pender, who dominated the last three sets of the CIF Southern Section quarterfinal as Alemany fell 20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-9.

Pender finished with 12 kills, five blocks and four aces.

Alemany (27-3-1) began the match with a 4-0 lead, led by a duo of kills from twins Tanner and Mason Briggs. The Warriors finished off the first set highlighted by back-to-back blocks by Ryan Horan and Lucas Zema, respectively. The belief of an upset was brewing.

“We were excited to play them,” senior setter Steven Reese said. “We brought energy and that first set showed what we were capable of.”

It’s as if Newport Harbor was shaking off the long bus drive, because in the second set Pender began his dominance – the Warriors had no answer.

“We did game plan for him. He’s just that good,” Reese said.

Despite taking an 18-16 lead in the third set, Pender and teammate Dayne Chalmers continued to pound balls into the gym floor. Chalmers finished with a game-high 21 kills.

Alemany had the third set tied at 20-20 before Newport Harbor (32-0) rallied to take a one-set advantage. Horan finished with a team-high 14 kills, Mason Briggs added eight kills, and Tanner Briggs tallied five kills and blocks.

“This team always believes it can win,” Alemany first-year coach David Decker said.

Alemany’s boys volleyball program hasn’t won a playoff game since 2010, and is always bounced out of the first round. This year’s team won 27 games, and was just a couple matches away from competing for a Division 1 title.

“I think we left a legacy,” senior Tanner Briggs said. “We talk about that 2010 team, because they broke through the first round. We did more than that, we might be the best team in program history.”

Briggs could be right. Since the 2008, 27 wins is the highest season total behind last year’s 19-win season.

“It’s been a fun year,” Tanner reminisced as the gym began to clear out. “We are just a bunch of rag-tag seniors that enjoy the game and took this season as far as we could.”

Tanner will continue to play volleyball in college for Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Mo., while his younger brother Mason will be the senior leader for next year’s team.

Chatsworth boys volleyball punches ticket to Open Division City final

CHATSWORTH – Chatsworth’s Khari Osborne has been the guiding force of his team’s success all year long, but this time the high flying senior outside hitter had some help at the most important time of the season.

Senior middle blocker and former soccer player Luis Garcia provided his best performance of his career with seven kills and five blocks to compliment Osborne’s 16 kills as Chatsworth defeated Granada Hills at home in four sets (20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22) and will enter this week’s Open Division final against defending champion Palisades on Saturday.

Chatsworth (40-5-1) will look to win its ninth city championship after winning the Division II title in 2016.

“I wanted to thank my setters,” Garcia said. “Throughout the season we’ve been struggling with our compatability. We were struggling with our threes and blocking wise. I think we’ve really been putting it down since the practices last week.”

The win not only put Chatsworth into the finals, but also helped win the season series between the two teams. Granada Hills won the first matchup at home before Chatsworth won the last two meetings.

In the first set, it looked like the game was going to fall in Granada Hills’ favor. Chatsworth struggled to find rhythm in its service game, much like it did in its loss to Granada.

“I got off to the game and was struggling and I was kind of worried for us at first,” Osborne said. “My teammates really stepped up to pick up the slack and helped us win tonight.”

Chatsworth setter Hunter Hewitt found his rhythm in the second set and finished with 45 assists and six digs.

“We really played as a team tonight,” Hewitt said. “Last time we struggled to play as a team but tonight we were able to keep ourselves in it.”

Granada Hills (19-7-2) was led by senior outside hitter Adi Fishman with 14 kills and Nick Olinger had 10 kills. The Highlanders, despite losing Fishman and Olinger, will be expected to contend  next season with the emergence of middle blocker Jake Thomas. Thomas added 10 kills for a team that will return eight players.

“That’s high school, you got to move on and you got to rebuild with the new guys coming up,” Granada Hills coach Tom Harp said. “We started with five middle blockers this year and we really didn’t know who was going to step up. He did and he’s been consistent all year.”

For Garcia his high school athletic career has been a roller coaster after having quit soccer and picking up volleyball in his junior year. Now he’s standing tall with the rest of the seniors.

“I started playing because Chatsworth didn’t have the best coach or the best environment and Coach Sina (Aghassy) kept dragging me into the gym,” Garcia said. “He said he saw the potential in me but really he just needed a tall kid to play. I’m glad he chose me.”

El Camino Real fell in five sets to Palisades after winning the opening two sets. Benjamin Nguyen had 10 kills and three blocks, Brandon Botdorf 12 kills Matthew Nguyen nine kills and six digs and Jake Miller had nine kills. Jonah Grossman added 22 assists, Matthew Torres had 19 assists and Jeremy McGranahan 21 digs. El Camino Real will return in the 2018-19 will return with most of its starters while losing only one senior.

Orange Lutheran uses balanced, precise attack to sweep Valencia in volleyball semifinals

ORANGE – Orange Lutheran swept Valencia of Valencia in three games Wednesday – 26-24, 25-20, 25-19 – in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 boys volleyball semifinal at Orange Lutheran.

The Lancers (28-8) will play Saddleback Valley Christian (21-13-1) in the championship match Saturday at Cerritos College. Saddleback Valley Christian defeated Quartz Hill in four games in the division’s other semifinal.

It will be the Orange Lutheran’s first appearance in a CIF-SS boys volleyball final since it won the Division 3 title in 2005.

Valencia (28-12), which finished second to West Ranch in the Foothill League, was seeded fourth in Division 2. The Vikings beat Mission Viejo on Monday in the quarterfinals.

The Lancers got contributions from several players. Senior middle blocker Taylor Jacobs had a team-high 12 kills. Senior outside hitter Justin Lomakin had six kills and two solo blocks, senior setter Brett Sheward contributed 13 assists and six digs and junior libero Troy Thomas added 11 digs.

Lomakin’s assessment was that Orange Lutheran was efficient in just about all of the important categories Wednesday.

“All of the blocking was really good,” Lomakin said, “our defense was phenomenal and we funneled the ball where it needed to go.”

Orange Lutheran was Valencia’s best friend at times during the first game. Lancers service errors and a bit of untidy passing helped the Vikings lead through much of the first game, including a 17-12 advantage. Valencia senior outside hitter Cameron Graves, playing with his right wrist and hand wrapped because of a fracture (he’s right-handed), was blasting kills with regularity.

The Lancers put together a 10-2 run to take the lead and went on to win the game 26-24.

Orange Lutheran in the second game led by as many as nine points as Ethan Mosser contributed a diving dig, a left-handed tap for a point and a block for a point. The Lancers took the second game 25-20.

Lutheran never trailed in the third game. Jacobs was active at the net, blocking and scoring, and the Lancers won 25-19.

Lancers coach Jon Basilio said Valencia was a worthy opponent.

“They’re a great team,” said Basilio, in his third season as Orange Lutheran’s coach. “They were super-athletic and super-tall. On any given day that team could beat any teams they’d compete against.”

Chatsworth boys swept by Palisades in City Open Division volleyball final

VAN NUYS – The Chatsworth High boys volleyball team went toe to toe with Palisades in the second set of Saturday’s CIF L.A. City Section Open Division final, and it was going to come down to who would blink first.

Ultimately, Chatsworth was overmatched by the Palisades’ athleticism, and Chatsworth fell 25-12, 33-31, 25-18 at Birmingham High School.

The win gave Palisades (33-2) its second consecutive City title.

“When you play against one of the best teams not only in the state but, in my opinion, the country, you’re bound to have at least one bad set,” Chatsworth coach Sina Aghassy said. “It showed a lot of resilience on our team fighting back.

“We talked about it all week that we need to have that resiliency in case a bad set happens. We showed fight, but hat’s off to coach Carlos Gray, they are a really great team.”

After Chatsworth (40-6-1) was outplayed in the first set, the Chancellors hung tough after being down 24-22 in the second set, but a service ace by junior Akhil Tangutur gave Palisades a two-set lead.

Chatsworth was led by Khari Osborne, who had 11 kills. Osborne stood out this season as one of the best outside hitters in the City Section. Despite being undersized at his position at  6-feet tall, he was an explosive hitter who showed quickness on the floor and soft hands as a potential setter.

Osborne expects to play college volleyball and says there are NCAA Division III schools showing interest.

“We’ve definitely matured a lot since last year,” Osborne said. “We went from losing tournaments last year in Crescenta Valley League and losing, going to the Burroughs and Eagle Rock tournaments and losing. This year we started winning all those matches and showed a lot of potential that we could get to this point. Our setter (Hunter Hewitt) grew a lot this year, and so did Alex Farkis. We really couldn’t have asked for more.”

Hewitt finished his prep career with 27 assists and eight digs. He is considered to be Chatsworth’s most improved player after coming into the program with little experience.

“I was always the kid everyone made fun of because I wasn’t there with everyone; I wasn’t as skilled,” Hewitt said. “Last year I struggled to set a ball. This year a got the hang of it. We put it all out there, and that’s all we could do.”

Alemany’s Mason Briggs leads Daily News’ boys volleyball All-Area Team

Player of the Year – Mason Briggs, Alemany, Jr.

Briggs led Alemany to one of its best seasons in the program’s history, as the Warriors had 27 victories overall and had a 10-2 record in the Mission League en route to reaching the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals. It was the furthest Alemany has advanced in the postseason.

Briggs led the Warriors to playoff wins over Oak Park and Santa Barbara before they were eliminated by one of the nation’s top teams in Newport Harbor.

Briggs, a junior setter who has committed to Long Beach State, is now playing for Team USA in Costa Rica against some of the best teams in the world.

“It has been an amazing experience so far, I’ve learned so much in two weeks and improved already,” Briggs said. “The level is so high during international competition. The other countries are very good and bring their own style. People are serving the ball tougher and hitting shots you aren’t used to, the game is very fast-paced.”

What made Briggs’ season with Alemany even more impressive was the grit and maturity he showed in big-match situations. Alemany’s only losses came to Mission League champion Loyola. Briggs never let the pressure of the environment get to him.

“Looking back on the year, it was successful for me, we broke records for the Alemany program, which was so fun to do,” Briggs said. “I can’t wait to keep playing at a high level and improving throughout the years.”

Briggs has the skills to play any position at the high school level, but he will be lose one of his closest friends and teammate, as his older brother Tanner is moving on to Fontbonne University in St. Louis. The loss of Tanner will mean Mason will have to find chemistry with a fresh set of outside hitters as Alemany looks to reclaim its spot in the playoffs, and take down Loyola for the first time in two decades.

“It was an amazing year with him, and I’m so proud of him and how well he did,” Mason Briggs said of Tanner. “He was a huge part of our team and killed it this year. It will be tough not playing with him and not having him on the court, but I know he will do big things at Fontbonne. I’ll miss playing with him, but I was blessed to be able to play with him for so long.”

Newcomer of the Year – Luke Benson, Newbury Park, Fr.

Benson was an all-Marmonte League first-team selection and will help Newbury Park make an even greater impact next year with area teams like Calabasas and Alemany losing a bulk of its lineup due to graduation. The 6-foot-5 outside hitter will be a larger piece of Newbury Park’s offense next season, especially with setters Luke Magnante and Huntley Bensink returning.

Coach of the Year – David Decker, Alemany

Decker took over a program that was tarnished by scandals that surrounded former coach James Quaglino, who was accused of sexual harassment of a former player. Decker brought new life to a program as a 20-year-old first-year coach having less than a year of club coaching experience. He turned Alemany into one of the best programs in Southern California.

Decker, a graduate of Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, has credited former coach Jim Hall for his wisdom while adding his own enthusiasm and work ethic.

Decker helped lead Alemany to a record of 27-3-1 before falling to Newport Harbor in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinals, which marked the first playoff win in program history since 2010.

CHATSWORTH – The Sierra Canyon girls volleyball team is looking to show the rest of the state that there’s still plenty of goals left to accomplish after last season’s dominant run to the state title.

Thursday night’s 25-15, 25-16, 25-18 home victory over Citrus Valley was a small pit stop for the Trailblazers, who started their season in Hawaii where they played against some of the best competition the state had to offer.

“I love Hawaiian volleyball. It is almost impossible to get a ball down against a Hawaiian defensive team,” Sierra Canyon coach Stefanie Wigfall said. “It made us work harder and made us think about how we can best earn our points.”

Since Sierra Canyon came back to the mainland, the matches haven’t been any easier. The team has lost two tough matches against Mater Dei and Torrey Pines as Wigfall tries to figure out the strongest back-line defense after starting libero Zoe Fleck graduated last season.

“Losing Zoe was a big loss for us, but we are just in the gym working hard,” senior middle blocker May Pertofsky said. “We have a lot of young players that are working to fulfill that work and we are just looking to get better.”

Pertofsky, who is committed to Michigan, will be asked to play a more diverse role as an outside hitter in addition to middle blocker. The new position will force her to become more flexible at receiving balls and transitioning to offense. A new role she is ready to accept.

“As a middle playing the outside it’s a bit of a new role because I’m having to work in the back row and go chase down balls, something I’m not used to doing,” Pertofsky said. “It’s been really fun to say I got a pancake because I’m not used to it. It’s been fun seeing our team pumped up and happy and just look good as a family this year.”

Sierra Canyon (7-5) hasn’t begun to play it’s best volleyball but still swept a hardened Citrus Valley team in a rematch of last season’s Southern Section first-round matchup.

Pertofsky added 18 kills, junior Jaylen Jordan had 10 kills and 11 digs and sophomore setter Taylor Simpson added 30 assists and five aces.

With Sierra Canyon cementing its mark in 2017, Wigfall said her team is ready to turn the page and focus on the present.

“It’s important to have high individual expectations, which lead to maintaining our high team expectations,” Wigfall said. “We still have to be hungry.”

Flintridge Sacred Heart girls volleyball sweeps Alemany at home

Flintridge Sacred Heart freshmen Daniella Thomas-Nathan and Peyton DeJardin showed Monday night why the duo could be bringing banners to its program.

Maybe two, maybe even more.

Thomas-Nathan and DeJardin fed off each other all night with help from a strong back row to guide a Flintridge Sacred Heart sweep of Alemany at home 25-15, 25-13, 25-9.

Thomas-Nathan had 15 kills and seven digs, DeJardin had 14 kills and four aces. The duo combined for a hit percentage of .440.

“The chemistry I have with everyone on the court is just getting better every day,” Thomas-Nathan said. “We know we are a young team but we have such a love for the game and we know that it’s only going to continue to grow.”

The combined strength of Thomas-Nathan and DeJardin was supplemented by sophomore setters Abby Kim and Ellie Lund. Lund and Kim combined for 35 assists against an experienced Alemany team that features six seniors.

Kim and Lund kept its team’s shape and limited Alemany captain Annah Rivera to six kills.

“As a team we just focus on keeping the game fun,” Kim said. “Whenever I’m feeding someone the ball, I feed whoever is having a good day and we just go from there.”

The road becomes tougher for Flintridge Sacred Heart (4-1) in the Sunrise League that features CIF Southern Section contenders Harvard-Westlake, Marymount and Notre Dame. The program is hoping to claim its first league title since 2015.

“I think the league we’ve done agood job so far of just staying focused in practice,” DeJardin said. “That will be the key is seeing if we just continue to stay focused.”

Alemany (11-4) will look to rebound after a long weekend tournament in Las Vegas. Despite just two days rest, coach Morgan Wijay didn’t feel fatigue was a factor in Monday’s result.

“Right now we are trying out a lot of players right now at different positions so it’s a lot trial and error right now,” Wijay said. “I just told them they need to prepare themselves better mentally before games.”

Alemany is scheduled to play two home games in straight days starting with Sylmar tomorrow and then Wednesday against Culver City.

Flintridge Sacred Heart will face off at Gabrielino Wednesday before returning home Friday to face off against 2017 Foothill League co-champion Valencia.

Westlake girls volleyball wins Chatsworth Invitational

CHATSWORTH >> Westlake outside hitter Katie Fleck let out a laugh that gave like a crescendo. Going from low to high in a matter of seconds, but the rhythm of her team’s beat has remained the same.

It is almost impossible to tell that Fleck and her team of experienced seniors with their laughter have had to weather multiple storms in the first month of their season.

If starting the season having played 11 of its first 13 games away from home wasn’t enough, then came tragedy on the court.

Starting outside hitter Elizabeth Crisp was lost for the season after tearing her ACL in a win over Harvard-Westlake.

Crisp’s knee may have buckled, but Westlake’s season hasn’t in the slightest.

Fleck and her team of road warriors went into the Chatsworth Invitational tournament and dominated from start to finish. Jen Trephan had 12 kills and three blocks and Westlake outmatched Palisades in the Gold Division final 25-11, 25-14.

“I think this season has been about Liz and for all of us,” Trephan said. “This is our last chance for all of us to play together and even though we miss Liz we are still going to keep pushing forward.”

The tearful laughter has been caused by Fleck whose instant chuckle sends her team into an incurable case of the giggles. The type of positive energy needed to keep the team together in what has otherwise been an excruciating run.

“The chemistry is so good on our team and that helps when it comes to tight matches,” Fleck said. “We just play with so much energy and so much joy.”

Westlake (12-1) has now established itself as the favorites to win the Marmonte League. Newbury Park looked like it was going to meet up with its league rival in the final before falling to Palisades in three sets.

The first round for Newbury Park became a competitive three sets with Oxnard. Arizona commit Simone Overbeck helped her team overcome being down 19-16 in set two and 12-9 in set three with her play in the back row.

Newbury Park coach Chris Forrest said Overbeck’s great improvement has been on her defense. Overbeck’s prowess to receive and transition will be greatly needed if her team expects to dethrone Westlake as the Marmonte League champions. The two programs will face off this Thursday at Newbury Park.

“She’s been awesome in terms of the work she’s been able to put in,” Forrest said. “Her ability to get better and to continue and improve. She’s a special player.”

Chatsworth and Taft both competed well, but have been nursing injuries to key players. Chatsworth outside hitter Chelsea Olmedo played after spraining her ankle a few weeks ago, but according to coach Sina Aghassy she was playing “at about 75 to 80 percent”.

Starting Taft setter Nieko Thomas missed the weekend tournament with an ankle injury.

In the silver bracket final Heritage Christian fell in a tightly fought three sets 25-21, 23-25, 15-9. In the bronze bracket final, Van Nuys fell to Marshall.

Daily News girls volleyball preview: Teams to watch

The 2018 girls volleyball season has started, and it’s easy to see there are many tremendous teams across the area plus a few surprises.

One significant change this season is that the CIF Southern Section will use a new system to set the Division 1 and Division 2 playoff brackets. At the end of the regular season, a committee will place the top teams, based on this season’s performance, in Division 1. This means no more predetermined playoff divisions for the top teams. The best will play the best in the postseason.

Here is a look at the top teams to watch this season:

TEAMS TO WATCH

Sierra Canyon: The Trailblazers look primed for another deep run in the Southern Section playoffs despite losing a key piece of their back line in libero Zoe Fleck (UC Santa Barbara). They return seniors May Pertofsky, a premier outside hitter, and middle blocker Zoie Stewart.

The team’s strong senior class is supported by sophomore setter Taylor Simpson and outside hitter Jaylen Jordan. Simpson is one of the best setters in the area. Last season she led an offense that became such a juggernaut in the state playoffs the Trailblazers dropped only one set on its way to winning the Division II CIF State championship.

Jordan is 5-foot-9 and might seem slightly undersized to play outside hitter, but she can jump out of the gym.

The backbone of the team lies in senior opposite Jordan Pillsbury, who provides depth to the lineup along with an ability to receive.

Harvard-Westlake: The Wolverines are looking to build off of last year’s successful run to the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals under second-year coach Hayley Blanchard.

The team’s returning players include senior setter Lindsay Kelly and middle blocker Caroline Tilton.

One of the big debates this season will be: Who is better, Simpson from Sierra Canyon or Kelly?

Kelly will be working with Tilton along with a solid junior class that includes middle blocker Lauren Juzang, Carly Wallace and Britt Gronemeyer.

The Wolverines’ first big test comes this week against Flintridge Sacred Heart.

Flintridge Sacred Heart: The Tologs have been one of the area’s hottest teams since it lost its season opener to Lakewood.

The success has come in large part to its super freshmen duo of Danielle Thomas-Nathan and Paige DeJardin. Thomas-Nathan has been pure dynamite with her ability to explode at the net along with her uncanny ability to play consistently in the back row. Thomas-Nathan had 16 kills against Alemany with a hit percentage over 40 percent and had 10 kills in one set against 2017 Foothill League co-champion Valencia.

DeJardin has exceptional hitting prowess and she can pass effectively to open opportunities for teammates and keep the attack consistent.

Behind the pair of great outside hitters are sophomores Ellie Lund at setter and defensive specialist Abby Kim.

If Flintridge Sacred Heart plans to go deep into the playoffs, it will need Lund and Kim to play off each other and feed Thomas-Nathan and DeJardin.

Westlake: It would be hard to find a team in the area that has gone through more adversity this season than Westlake.

The Warriors opened the season with 11 of its first 13 games on the road, and it lost starting outside hitter Elizabeth Crisp to an ACL injury.

But still Westlake has prospered, earning a big win on the road against Harvard-Westlake and winning the Chatsworth Invitational Tournament.

Westlake players to watch include 6-foot-2 senior outside hitter Jen Trephan, senior setter Ashley Webb and junior outside hitter Katie Fleck.

Trephan with her length is an exceptional passer and Webb can also rip the ball across the court. Fleck is an added attacker who can also play the back row well.

Westlake could be the most layered team in the area with players such as senior middle blocker Olivia Dinardo, who has been a key contributor, and senior outside hitter Lorelei Lemon coming off the bench to play at key points.

The Daily News will run Part 2 of the girls volleyball preview, which includes an outlook on the area’s best leagues, on Thursday.

Mission League: The Mission League is the toughest league in the area and each match will have a playoff atmosphere. Harvard-Westlake brings together plenty of experience, Notre Dame is loaded with senior talent, Marymount is never easy to play on the road and Flintridge Sacred Heart has some of the best underclassmen in the Southern Section.

It will come down to whose game is clean in the back row and setting.

Notre Dame and Harvard-Westlake are likely to be the top two teams coming out of the league, but do not underestimate the talent of Flintridge Sacred Heart. Danielle Thomas-Nathan, even as a freshman, is one of the area’s best all-around players, and Abby Kim is playing beyond her years as a defensive specialist and setter.

Prediction: Flintridge Sacred Heart. Young, bold, brash and a squad that doesn’t know what it’s capable of. Thomas-Nathan leaves her imprint no matter who she is playing for and Kim makes the defense-to-offense transition look easy.

Sunrise League: There’s plenty of competition between Alemany and Chaminade. Alemany has played a tough nonleague schedule and has solid play at the net with outside hitter Annah Rivera along with Ruth Kayongo. Chaminade, under new coach Cory Chandler, has won six straight since losing its opener to Calabasas.

Prediction: Alemany. A tough nonleague schedule helps it prepare for a Chaminade team that is on the rise. Ultimately, however, Alemany wins the day.

Marmonte League: Westlake has dominated the Marmonte League, but the ambitions for this team go beyond its sixth straight title. This team is layered with talent up front with Jen Trephan, Katie Fleck and Ashley Webb. The loss of Elizabeth Crisp has only made this team stronger, and in her absence the Warriors have continued to prosper, having won 14 straight matches.

Newbury Park has Arizona commit Simone Overbeck, who will give Westlake trouble, but she’ll need some help.

Prediction: Westlake. Very layered bench with length upfront and has shown it can win against the top teams in Southern California.

Foothill League: The Foothill League in years past has been dictated by Valencia and Hart, but this season it is seeing more balance. Hart is off to a strong start and opened the season by beating L.A. City Section champion Granada Hills. Coach Mary Irilian brings back a slew of seniors, including Megan Soto, Lina Elsee, Grace Eck, Ruby Duncan and Kylie Sathre.

Don’t let Valencia’s 2-8 record fool you. Coach Ray Sanchez will have his team prepared, plus the Vikings have junior outside hitter Kaelyn Adams and hope for the return of Camille Kamaraukas, who has been out with an ankle injury.

Golden Valley is having the best start in the program’s history, and Saugus already has an early-season win over Valencia.

Prediction: Hart. Plenty of senior talent and the continuity to go with it. Irilian will have her team prepared and the experience wins out.

West Valley League: Granada Hills is expected to contend for another West Valley League title. Outside hitter Carissa Bradford and Lia Berkholds provide plenty of athleticism and power at the net as the program looks to add another L.A. City Section title to the trophy case.

Taft is expected to challenge Granada Hills for league supremacy. Senior Samantha Hakimi is starting to emerge as a strong threat backed by juniors Shelby Roloff, Nieko Thomas and Danae Johnson. Taft libero Quintessa Reckleff is one of the premier players at her position and will be the backbone for this young Taft front row.

Chatsworth will be in the mix under Coach Sina Aghassy and is led by senior outside hitter Chelsea Olmedo and libero Kelly Landsman. El Camino Real returns just two seniors and is led by standout freshman outside hitter Amaya Bernardo.

Prediction: Granada Hills. Bradford and Berkholds provide enough for the Highlanders as the rest of the league programs discover what it has.

Valley Mission League: The surprise league to watch is this one because of the battles between Van Nuys, San Fernando and Kennedy. San Fernando started its season by winning five straight, including a win over Van Nuys, which competed in the L.A. City Section Division 1 playoffs last season. Kennedy has opened league with wins over Canoga Park and Panorama City.

The Valley Mission League is growing stronger in volleyball, and it will be fun to watch the three teams spar over a potential No. 1 seed in the City playoffs.

Prediction: San Fernando. The upstart Tigers have star libero Carolina Chavez and setter Leslie Reyes, giving them the pieces needed to win consistently.

WOODLAND HILLS >> Taft outside hitter Shelby Roloff was uncomfortable. Granada Hills senior Carissa Bradford was dripping in sweat and the ball felt slippery.

It was as if John Furlong Gymnasium had turned into a human sauna before the opening serve of Tuesday night’s West Valley League girls volleyball opener.

Despite the lack of air conditioning, the two West Valley League teams battled and fought as only rivals could.

Taft libero Quintessa Reckleff proved to be the ultimate difference. The senior flew around her half of the court, and coupled by a consistent effort at the net, outlasted Granada Hills in a blazing five-set match (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 9-25, 15-9).

Reckleff finished the night with 25 digs and 14 assists.

“We all wanted it really bad and our blockers worked very well in practice,” Reckleff said. “I had to do everything in my power to do my job and we did it.”

To prepare for Tuesday’s conditions, coach Arman Mercado had turned the heat on in the gym.

The result for Taft (15-4, 1-0) was five different players that contributed up front led by Shelby Roloff and Samantha Hakimi. Roloff led her team with 12 kills and three blocks and Hakimi had 11 kills with a block. Sophomore Amiree Hendricks-Walker played a decisive role with nine kills, four blocks and the match deciding kill for Taft.

“My face was so red and it hurt so badly,” Roloff said. “But Samantha says some magic words and I just wanna hit the ball so hard with all my power.”

Granada Hills (6-6, 0-1) took control with a 4-0 run to start the second set but key errors gave Taft life. The third set saw allowed Reckleff get in rhythm with Hakimi and Roloff.

The Highlanders took control in the fourth set led by seniors Carissa Bradford and Lea Raha. Bradford finished with a game high 15 kills and Raha had 14 kills.

“That was just a well played game of volleyball,” coach Tom Harp said. “But when you make mistakes then unfortunately good teams tend to capitalize. We just need to focus up and get ready for next week.”

The win helped Taft recuperate from last season’s semifinal loss to Granada Hills in the L.A. City Section semifinals.

“This team has worked so hard all summer preparing for this season,” Hakimi said. “The hot days in the gym, the endless hours of practice and we have had this game on our calendar since we lost last year. We played so well and I believe this team has the potential to go farther then any city section team has ever gone. We are ready to compete with everybody at this point.”
